Gap Filler is a creative urban regeneration initiative that facilitates a wide range of temporary projects, events, installations and amenities in the city.
The Dance-O-Mat is a coin operated dance floor that uses an ex-laundromat washing machine to power the four speakers, lights and disco ball. Gap Filler created this project to respond to the lack of spaces for dance in post-quake Christchurch and bring people, life and energy back to the central city, well it sure did that! Since 2012 thousands of people have used the Dance-O-Mat, including Prince Charles and Camilla, the King and Queen of Denmark and the Blue Man Group!
It has also featured in the New York Times and Lonely Planet and been recreated in Tauranga and Auckland (so far – we’re going for world domination). Just take along a $2 coin and any music capable device (it’s got blue-tooth and an old school AV cord), plug in and boogie on down!
